The Kootenays come in two flavours, East & West.  Separated by the Selkirk & Purcell Mtn. Range - each region unique in flavour and lifestyle.

Rich in history, the Kootenay area was a mining Mecca just before the turn of the 20th century.  If you are a Historian, this is a must stop on your vacation.

After the turn of the century, the West Kootenays were sustained by forestry, while the east Kootenays continued to prosper from mining, as well as forestry.  The West Kootenays faced many challenges in the early 1980's with the closure of it's largest mill, 'Kootenay Forest Products'. The community then turned to tourism to boost a devastated economy.

This area is no stranger to the challenges of change throughout the past 100 years + - and has had great success promoting tourism and lifestyle as it's main industries.  (Tourism combined is the largest industry, construction and  manufacturing has seen a substantial increase, and education  -- are the 3 top runners).

The lifestyle of the West Kootenays attracts many variations of people, diverse in its makeup, its beauty - from Artisans to Historians. It has become known as a "Cultural" center...as well as a hot spot for "Alternative Lifestyle"

The East Kootenays is known better known for it's fishing, hunting and the ruggedness of the Rocky Mountains. (which provides some of the best powder skiing in BC). It is truly an outdoorsmen/womans paradise.  Hunting moose or trophy Elk, fishing and most recently, the introduction of Wild Turkey into both East and West has become a real attraction for hunters and outfitters alike - ( a management issue for residents).

With the rugged Purcell’s to the left, and the grand Rockies to the right, the East Kootenays are a natural home for wildlife habitat.

But one thing remains certain, the beauty of both Kootenays is an absolute wonderland of nature and geographical exploration.  Many people that choose to live here have a real appreciation for natures adventure.
